Lorna Gerome, Director of Human Resources

Where were you born (and raised, if different)?

I was born in Akron Ohio, but raised in Virginia. My family moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia when I was 8 years old.

When and why did you move to the Charlottesville/Albemarle area?

My husband and I met while attending UVA and loved this area.   When we graduated in the early eighties, the job market was tight.  We moved to the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area for work. While we enjoyed the Triangle area, we always hoped to return to “Sweet Home Cville.”  When our daughters were 7 and 8, we felt as though we had a window to move before they settled into school, so began our quest to move back in January 2000.  I was offered a job with Albemarle County in March 2000 and we said goodbye to the smell of sweet tobacco, the sight of loblolly pines and the Durham Bulls baseball team.

What neighborhood do you live in now?

Ivy, on a country road.

Family (spouse, kids, etc.)?

My husband, Will Crowder, and I have two daughters, Savannah and Marin.  We became empty nesters this fall, as Marin started her first year at Virginia Wesleyan College and Savannah began her sophomore year at VCU.

What is your alma mater and when did you graduate?

I graduated from the University of Virginia with at BA in Government in 1982 and NC State  with a Masters in Public Administration in 1987.

What were you doing before you came to work for the County?

Human Resource work at Duke University.

Your job title is Director of Human Resources - what, in your own words, would you say you do?

I lead a team focused on finding the right people, getting them on the right seat on the bus and keeping them excited about working for Albemarle County and Albemarle School Division.

What is the best part of your job? The most difficult part?

The best part is that leadership truly values employees and considers the impact on employees in making organizational decisions.   The most difficult part is balancing the needs of both the General Government and the School Division.

How does your job most directly impact the average person?

The work we do in ensuring that we have the right teachers in the classroom, well trained police officers on duty , knowledgeable social workers serving the citizens and  safety conscious bus drivers behind the wheel, impacts Albemarle County students and citizens in the education and services they receive.  

What is the most interesting project or work experience that you've had while with the County?

The MOST interesting personnel issues have to be kept confidential! Currently, we are doing some interesting work in looking at different ways managers can recognize their employees.

What is a little-known fact about you?

In our early 20’s, my husband and I both quit our jobs, put all of our belongings in storage, and took a three month trip across the country.   We took back roads and mostly camped in National Parks.  As wonderful as it was seeing the Grand Canyon, Arches National Park and the Badlands, I cannot imagine camping for three months now!

What do you do outside of work hours - hobbies, etc.?

I love the local scene-music (especially Blues - Ian Gilliam, Eli Cook), restaurants (Sheebeen, Whiskey Jar), hiking in the parks (Mint Springs, Walnut Creek) and enjoying the many Albemarle County vineyards .  I also love cooking (not baking, as I don’t like following directions)!
