Albemarle Democrats cancel Dumler appearance

Embattled Albemarle Supervisor Christopher J. Dumler will not appear at a Democratic Party event this morning that attracted attention from several would-be protestors.
The Albemarle and Charlottesville Democratic committees originally invited Dumler and Supervisor Ann H. Mallek to speak about issues facing county government in the coming year.
Cynthia Neff, vice-chair of the Albemarle Democrats, said in an email Friday morning that the event has been postponed.
Instead, the party will stage a reading from Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s new book “The Last Line of Defense.” at 9:30 a.m. at CitySpace on the Downtown Mall.
“Cuccinelli’s book has drawn attention statewide for its attacks on Medicare, Social Security and even public recreation centers,” Neff said in a statement.
Neff declined to comment for the reasons for the program change.
Dumler pleaded guilty Jan. 31 to a misdemeanor charge of sexual battery. He had been charged in October with one count of forcible sodomy.
His scheduled appearance at the Democratic breakfast sparked a call on Facebook for the event to be picketed.
A petition drive to ask the Albemarle Circuit Court to consider removing Dumler from office is also under way.
