Crystal Rejonis, Technology Training Specialist, Albemarle County
Where were you born (and raised, if different)?
I was born in Charlottesville and raised in Albemarle county in the Keswick area.
When and why did you move to the Charlottesville/Albemarle area?
My parents both also grew up in the Cismont/Keswick area. I love that I was able to spend my childhood there as well, surrounded by a large extended family.
What neighborhood do you live in now?
For the last 10 years I have lived in Scottsville, just inside the Fluvanna line.
Family (spouse, kids, etc.)?
I have been married to my husband Robert Rejonis since 2001. Robert also works for Albemarle County.
What is your alma mater and when did you graduate?
I graduated from Albemarle High in 1999.
What were you doing before you came to work for the County?
For two year 2 years I interned at SNL Financial. During my last year at Albemarle High I was also dually enrolled at PVCC.
Your job title is Technology Training Specialist - what, in your own words, would you say you do?
I learn how to use existing and new software packages, and teach staff how to use them effectively and efficiently.
What is the best part of your job? The most difficult part?
The absolute best part of my job is watching the reactions in the classroom of my “students.” I often see someone come in scared or frustrated with a software package, then see the person leave the class confident and ready. It is amazing to watch that progression. The most difficult aspect is finding that delicate balance between too much information and not enough. Every person learns a little bit different than the next. I have to bring lessons to life in a way that anyone can understand through text, pictures and video, without making them feel bored or overwhelmed.
How does your job most directly impact the average person?
I assist the staff in learning how to efficiently use the tools they are provided. In doing so, they are able to assist the public in a more timely fashion.
What is the most interesting project or work experience that you've had while with the county?
Albemarle County began using a procurement card program last year. I participated in the implementation of the program and created the training for of the end users. My first official training as “Technology Training Specialist” was in front of 100+ school Office Associates and Administrators, many of whom were my educators. It was a very proud moment.
What is a little-known fact about you?
My right eye was once featured on an album cover. The album was called “All Eyes on You” and the band members silhouettes were super imposed on my pupil.
What do you do outside of work hours - hobbies, etc.?
I caught the running bug a few years ago. I collect race bibs and pictures from all of the races I have completed in my office to remind myself of how much I can accomplish when I set my mind to it and just take that first step. So far I have participated in races in Charlottesville and Richmond. I also really love road trips. The longest trip so far was Austin, Texas with a detour of New Orleans, Louisiana on the way back.
On Saturday, Charlottesville opened the Meadows Creek Gardens Disc Golf Course. That made us curious about the activities of our readers. We'd like to know... Have you ever played disc golf?Vote Now
