After serving as principal of Stony Point Elementary School for the past seven years, Carrie Neeley is leaving Albemarle County Public Schools.
Neeley has been named chief elementary officer for Stafford County Public Schools, where she began her career as a teacher. In her new position, she will oversee 17 elementary schools and 12,000 students.
“This was a very difficult decision for me,” said Neeley. “Stony Point is a wonderful, collaborative community, one that welcomes innovation, with uncommonly dedicated teachers and classified staff.
“Carrie has been an exceptional leader for our school division, especially in leading the way towards more contemporary instructional models,” said Matt Haas, assistant superintendent for organizational and human resource leadership for Albemarle County Public Schools. “This is a well-earned promotion.”
During Neeley’s time as principal, Stony Point was awarded the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence. Additionally, the school was named a Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education in recognition of its environmental health and wellness programs. Stony Point has been a leader in Albemarle County’s “maker curriculum” initiative, which encourages a hands-on approach to problem solving and research.
“We are proud of what she accomplished for our students and wish her the very best in this new career opportunity,” Haas said.
In addition to new professional opportunities, Neeley anticipates opportunities for personal growth in her new position.
“It is a challenging responsibility, but one that has great promise and will allow me to expand the contributions I can make to young people,” said Neeley.
The division expects to hire a new principal by the beginning of the school year on August 20.
