Opinion/Editorial: Incentives may be effective for hotel
Daily Progress Editorial Thursday, March 09, 2017 at 6 a.m.
Charlottesville’s proposed deal with Landmark Hotel developer John Dewberry has come in for some criticism.
But it boils down to this:
Do you want to be “right”? Or do you want to be effective?
The abandoned project, which Mr. Dewberry bought when the previous developer hit financial problems, has been an eyesore on the Downtown Mall for years.
Local residents feel strongly about the issue because it’s become personal. The neglected structure is an affront to our sense of progress, prosperity and panache. After all, it’s hard to hold up your head as a “world-class city” if you have a derelict so prominently in your midst.
