Opinion/Editorial: Improving community involvement

In Charlottesville-Albemarle, “community engagement” now has become a “thing” (to borrow from today’s vernacular).
What used to be plain old “public comment” is being elevated in many cases to a new level that achieves “dialog,” or true give-and-take communication, rather than just government presenting a proposal and the public presenting a response.
There are even calls to elevate this to a still higher level, with government alerting constituents regularly and frequently via emerging electronic technologies (“Use technology to keep public informed about government,” The Daily Progress, Aug. 14, 2016).
But let’s look at where things stand right now.
