City allowing bikes and planning trails at Ragged Mountain

Albemarle County officials maintain that their rules prohibit mountain biking at the Ragged Mountain Natural Area, but the Charlottesville City Council has directed its staff to begin construction of trails around the Ragged Mountain reservoir that will accommodate hikers, trail runners and cyclists.
According to the director of the city parks department, the council decision means cyclists can now use the existing trails designated for shared use.
In a 3-2 vote Monday, the council approved a new parks and recreation department trail-use plan. In December, the council instructed department director Brian Daly to return to the council within six months with a plan for shared- and exclusive-use trails that circumnavigate the entire reservoir.
