City sponsored Tom Tom festival with $25K

After recently gaining $25,000 in public funds with a direct pitch to the Charlottesville City Council, the Tom Tom Founders Festival on Thursday convened its first Hometown Summit, a new three-day symposium on the future of small and mid-sized cities.
Several councilors said assisting the new event will put the city on the map, but two years ago, the Albemarle County and Charlottesville officials who oversee public grant applications from nonprofit organizations and community agencies expressed concerns about increasing funding for the festival.
Last month, the council awarded the Tom Tom Foundation with money from its discretionary strategic initiatives fund after festival director Paul Beyer lobbied the council to sponsor the summit of elected public officials, policymakers, investors and innovators from across the country.
