Laufer, Hill win Democratic council nominations; Fenwick out

About four months after shocking the city of Charlottesville with his tie-breaking vote to remove the city’s statue of Robert E. Lee, incumbent Bob Fenwick lost his re-election bid for the City Council in a primary election Tuesday.

While other factors played a role in Fenwick’s loss by more than 1,800 votes in Tuesday’s Democratic primary, his defeat means Amy Laufer and Heather Hill will face a slew of independent candidates who are seeking to upset the Democratic Party in November.

At approximately 9 p.m. Tuesday, two hours after the polls closed, the two nominees were beginning to celebrate their anticipated victory with Mayor Mike Signer, Councilor Kathy Galvin and throngs of relatives, friends and supporters at Champion Brewery.
