Charlottesville councilors seek reset after rocky campaign season, Walker’s win

Following Charlottesville Councilor-elect Nikuyah Walker’s victory in Tuesday’s election, Mayor Mike Signer said he’s prepared to work with her next year despite a contentious relationship between the two.
 
Walker is the first independent candidate elected to the City Council since 1948. Initially encouraged by some of her colleagues to run as a Democrat, she chose to defy party patronage and challenge the status quo of Democratic dominance.
 
In an email Wednesday, Signer said he was “very impressed with the energy and organization” of Walker’s grass-roots campaign.
