Significantly, Democrats also captured more than a dozen seats in the House of Delegates.
And in Charlottesville, Nikuyah Walker notched an historic win as an independent in the traditionally Democratic city.
Gov.-elect Ralph Northam’s defeat of Republican Ed Gillespie dwarfed expectations — nearly 54 percent compared to Mr. Gillespie’s 45 percent.
