Carrying on a beloved bookseller’s work

Virginia’s oldest independent bookstore has a new owner, who is taking over after a tough year following the unexpected death of longtime owner Carol Troxell.
 
Julia Kudravetz, perhaps best known in the local literary community for co-founding the Charlottesville Reading Series, has taken the helm at New Dominion Bookshop. Opened in 1924, the long-running shop on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall has only changed hands once before, when founder C.C. Wells sold it to Troxell in 1987.
 
Troxell died in January at the age of 68, leaving staff, shop regulars and friends to mourn a mainstay of the city’s downtown business landscape.
