Facing slumping sales, biz owners seek funding for downtown

Amid panic over slipping retail and restaurant sales in Charlottesville, the City Council has tasked city staff to work with the downtown business community on an economic recovery plan. For starters, the downtown business community has asked for $250,000 to try to turn things around immediately.

Some city councilors have said they support some form of spending plan, but City Manager Maurice Jones said the Fiscal Year 2019 budget could be “tight.” Jones recently warned a councilor to be careful about “making promises” on earmarking tax income from the Downtown Mall exclusively for the district’s needs.
