Turning a superhero flick into a teachable moment

The upcoming release of the movie “Black Panther” is expected to make a cultural splash, but some locals also are using it as an opportunity to better the community.

Organized in part by Charlottesville City Councilor Wes Bellamy, Unity Cville and the Black Professionals Network of Charlottesville are co-sponsoring a premiere and discussion event at the Violet Crown on Thursday in conjunction with the film’s release.

The live-action movie is the latest part of Marvel’s cinematic universe and focuses on the character Black Panther, a superhero and monarch of the fictional African nation Wakanda. It has gained buzz thanks to its Afro-futuristic design and primarily black cast and creative team.
