More homegrown coffeehouses are taking the roasting process into their own hands

It’s hardly surprising to find a glut of coffee shops in a college town; at times, it seems you can’t even swing a dead cat in Charlottesville without hitting at least two tattooed baristas. But if you’ve detected the warm, nutty scent of freshly roasted beans in the air downtown, you know there’s something else abuzz here.

They’re “dropping a roast,” as they say in the industry, at least in Portland, Oregon.

As Charlottesville becomes ever more Portlandish, a burgeoning number of companies are roasting their own beans on site, with owners traipsing to coffee farms around the world in search of the perfect raw green bean.
