Super speller: Augusta County student wins regional bee

Augusta County seventh-grader Finn Irving grinned on stage as he correctly spelled the word that opened the door to his last challenge: r-e-n-d-e-z-v-o-u-s.

The Daily Progress Regional Spelling Bee, held Saturday morning at Albemarle High School, flew by in a whirl of words. Within the first hour, 25 young spellers from Charlottesville, Waynesboro, Staunton and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna and Augusta were whittled down to just five.

Twenty minutes later and it was down to just Finn, 13, and Layla Bouber, 12, of Henley Middle School in Albemarle County.
