As large developments loom, Fifeville tries to envision its own future

As construction of the Marriott Fairfield Inn at the corner of Ridge Street and Cherry Avenue nears completion, residents of the Fifeville area of Charlottesville are wondering if other large developments will begin to pop up along their neighborhood’s main thoroughfare.

According to people working on a planning project intended to let the community have some say on what might change there — such as sidewalks, parking lots, the roadway and other underutilized parcels — some residents can’t help but notice the new hotel and the dizzying pace of development nearby on West Main Street.

“It’s probably pretty eye-opening for residents that something of that scale can be built on Cherry. I think they have concerns, especially with the height and density on West Main Street, which is backing up to Cherry,” said Nick Morrison, a planner with the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission.
