Group to take Hatton Ferry off VDOT’s hands

After much talk, the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society is poised to take control of the Hatton Ferry near Scottsville.

Stationed on the James River, the poled ferry is believed to be the only one still in operation in the country. Operations were in jeopardy when the Virginia Department of Transportation announced in May that it would no longer fund the ferry and the Albemarle Board of Supervisors said the county didn’t have enough money to pick up the tab.

“We’re willing to accept ownership of it,” said Steven G. Meeks, president of the local historical society.
