Charlottesville Tomorrow has begun the search for its first Editor-In-Chief. After three years, News Editor Elliott Robinson is moving on to become VPM’s News Director, a big job that is a deserved reward for the work he put into our organization and our community. The good news is we are still part of his coverage area, which means he will get paid to pay attention to us! Elliott leaves behind big shoes to fill. These kinds of transitions are always part of the experience when small organizations with big ambitions grow up.
Now we have to hire another inspirational newsroom leader with a heart for our values and the professional toolkit to handle a small competitive media landscape full of big ideas, tough truths, and engaged people from every kind of background. Someone who understands Virginia and the South and college towns and race and municipal government. Someone who believes the future of journalism and news is right here, in close contact with community.
We have changed the job description from News Editor to Editor-In-Chief because the role has grown and evolved under Elliott. The team has also grown, and the founding of the Charlottesville Inclusive Media project has opened new channels, programs and audiences. We are hoping to find someone who understands that we are only as good as our news coverage and also that our news coverage is only as good as our connection to our readers.
In September, the newsroom will welcome Tamica Jean-Charles to the team as Engagement Reporter. More on that later, but it means that the Editor-In-Chief will inherit a mature team of four amazing female journalists, an inspiring mission and values, a diverse and energized board, and a community of readers that is diverse, creative, and passionate.
This isn’t a time to be sad about Elliott Robinson leaving Charlottesville Tomorrow. It’s time to celebrate the future of journalism in Virginia and welcome someone new into our lives.
