County high schoolers tour Charlottesville monuments, memorials

Students from Albemarle, Monticello and Western Albemarle high schools are studying monuments and their societal significance for a project called Let ‘Em Shine. For their final assignment, groups of students will design their own monument or virtual exhibit.

On Tuesday, participating students visited Charlottesville’s statues of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, currently covered in black shrouds by order of City Council. They also visited the Daughters of Zion Cemetery, the  Confederate Memorial in Court Square, and the site of the Court Square slave auction block.

The Let ‘Em Shine project is funded by a $20,000 grant through the LNRG Innovators Challenge.
