What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
The paperwork is the most challenging aspect of being a Special Education teacher. All of the “legal” documents can be challenging.
What’s the most common misconception about your job?
People assume that working with students with special needs is incredibly difficult because of behavior issues. It can be challenging at times, but it is also very rewarding. Having patience, organizational skills, and a good sense of humor all helps.
Where do you see the teaching field in 5 years?
I believe that all students will have greater access to technology, and that there will be more project-based learning in our schools. I also believe that children will learn to be better citizens with the continued use of Responsive Classroom.
What outside experience prepared you best to become a teacher?
Being a parent has helped me become a better teacher. I volunteered in my children’s classrooms when they were in Elementary School. I learned through volunteering that I loved working with children and enjoyed watching them grow and learn. I particularly enjoyed helping students who struggled with learning to read which made me want to teach children with special needs.
