Anne Andrews – Neighbor of the Week

Anne Andrews – Albemarle County

Tell us about your volunteer activities.
I volunteer for Book Buddies, Habitat for Humanity and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

What inspires you to volunteer?
My volunteer work makes me very happy. I’ve always been a “people” person. When I can be around striving people, be they adult or first graders, who are working hard to achieve a dream, my heart sings for and with them.

If your volunteer work could make one long-lasting change, what would you want it be?
That every individual with whom I’ve worked has learned through this process that they have unknown strengths which will help them attain further leaps through their lives. That they know what once seemed impossible is not a mere dream, and they will look for new opportunities.

What is a little-known fact about you?
Until I was 18 and went to college, I was known as Shirley. The day I arrived on campus I became Anne, except when I went home to the tiny town in which I grew up and there I was still Shirley.

What brought you to Charlottesville/Albemarle County?
Upon retirement, my husband and I wanted live close enough to Richmond to see our first grandchildren grow up. Charlottesville seemed the perfect place, university, good hospitals etc. Twenty three years later we believe strongly that we made a very good choice.
