Starting July 1, Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority officials will begin enforcing a new smoke-free policy that prohibits smoking anywhere within 25 feet of any authority-owned building.

According to a resolution approved by the authority’s board Monday, CRHA residents who are caught violating the rules more than five times could have their lease terminated.

Based on a 2016 mandate from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Charlottesville housing authority spent approximately 10 months working to develop the new policy.
