A vacant lot on South First Street and a property along Levy Avenue that currently houses a parking lot and two community-based nonprofits soon could be the first steps to tackling some of the problems currently ailing Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority properties.
Local architect Gregory Powe is among potential developers vying to collaborate with CRHA in a public-private partnership to build as many as 175 new residences in its first phase. It is unclear how many of those units will be subsidized or designated as affordable for household making less than half of the city’s median annual income.
CRHA Executive Director Grant Duffield said new homes could relieve residents of Crescent Halls, which recently has suffered a number of maintenance issues.
