From the NewsroomThe day-to-day, behind the scenes life at Charlottesville Tomorrow.
This week, we welcome Ruth Serven Smith to our growing list of journalists who have shared their work with Charlottesville Tomorrow.
While originally from Oklahoma and a proud Midwesterner, Ruth is currently based in Birmingham, Alabama. Her journalism work includes a three-year stint as a reporter and editor for the Daily Progress and work in Columbia, Missouri, Kansas City and Indianapolis.
“I’m happy to have Ruth join us as one of the freelance writers with expertise in a local subject,” said Elliott Robinson, News Editor for Charlottesville Tomorrow. “I have yet to meet a journalist who didn’t have a list of unwritten stories from previous beats. When I saw Ruth mentioning the UVA stories she couldn’t get to before leaving Charlottesville, I jumped at the chance to give her the opportunity to report on them.”
Some of Ruth’s favorite writers are Lane DeGregory, Flannery O’Conner, Daniel Woodrell, David Halberstam and Laura Hilenbrand. She can often be found listening to folk music, reading a novel or tramping through a state park.
Ruth is a proud graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Her article about COVID reporting at UVA was published today on Charlottesville Tomorrow’s website.
