It started last summer when she noticed a few children riding bicycles that didn’t seem safe. After fixing their bikes and giving out some helmets, Charlottesville police Officer Lynn Childers saw an opportunity to incorporate a hobby into her job.
Childers now visits Riverside Avenue every Tuesday to go cycling with the neighborhood kids. Even if there is just one child who comes out on one of those Tuesdays, she’s developing a relationship and building trust that police and community members need to keep everyone safe, she said.
That’s the goal of the nascent Pedal Power program, which Childers started last year as a way to improve community engagement and link children with safer bicycles.
