Two rising seniors from Charlottesville High School will continue their studies this summer in Jordan and Tajikistan. Carman Drake will study Arabic in Amman, Jordan and Richard Potter will study Persian in Tajikistan.
The two received merit-based scholarships to participate in the U.S. Department of State National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Scholarship Program in a competitive application process which began last fall.
“The scholarship covers all program costs for participants including domestic and international travel; tuition and related academic preparation; language testing; educational and cultural activities focused on language learning; orientations; meals; and accommodations, usually with a host family,” said Charlottesville schools spokeswoman Cass Cannon.
The immersion program exposes students to world languages less commonly-taught in U.S. schools. Applications for programs in 2014-15 will be available later this summer at www.nsliforyouth.org.
