(R-Rio), a former Chairman of the
Albemarle County Planning Commission
and President of
, has announced he is running for the Rio seat on the
Albemarle County Board of Supervisors
. Incumbent Supervisor,
(D-Rio), has not yet announced if he is running for re-election and a second term on the Board.
The general election takes place in November and local political parties will officially nominate their candidates between May 8, 2009 and June 9, 2009. The Jack Jouett and Samuel Miller District seats will also be on the November ballot.
Thomas was appointed to the Planning Commission by former Supervisor David Bowerman. Thomas was unsuccessful in his bid to get the Republican Party’s nomination in June 2005 when Gary Grant was picked to run for the open seat being vacated by Bowerman. Thomas has announced he is again running as a Republican in this election.
Thomas appeared today on WINA AM 1070’s Rob Schilling Show to share his announcement. “I will work for the people of the Rio District, and all of Albemarle County,” said Thomas. “I plan to knock on every door in the Rio district and find out what people’s concerns are.”
Thomas discussed his philosophy as a fiscal conservative. “The County needs to find a way to be more conservative with the tax dollars they are taking in,” said Thomas. “I don’t like the way things are being handled [in local government]….The Board needs to be more accountable [to the people].”
