Charlottesville, VA – With the start of the 2015-2016 school year quickly approaching, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Blue Ridge is seeking the community’s help in finding 25 mentors for 25 children over the course of the next 25 days to serve in our School-Based mentoring program.

School-Based or Site-Based Mentoring is one of two programs offered through Big Brothers Big Sisters. During the school year, Bigs, or mentors, meet their Little (youth) at his or her school for lunch and recess or after school at a community center for about an hour. During the summer months, Bigs and Littles keep in touch by phone and by writing each other letters.

Site-Based Mentoring is very popular among professionals, college students or stay-at-home parents who have constraints on their time.  “It’s such an easy way to dip a foot in the water,” says Jackie Bright, Executive Director. “Most prospective mentors worry that they don’t have enough time to volunteer or that they won’t know what to do with a child. School-Based mentoring takes just 45 minutes a week, during the school year, and each site has built-in activities like the playground and we provide board games, art supplies, books and more.”

One current Big who is a working professional says, “It’s really just so easy. I head to my Little’s school during my lunch hour and we eat together and play board games.”

For more information on being a mentor, contact Latara Salisbury at lsalisbury@blueridgebigs.org.  BBBS is also available for group presentations – we’ll bring everything to your company or organization – big or small!
