CFD Stop & Knock Campaign

The Charlottesville Fire Department will be conducting our annual neighborhood “Stop and Knock” canvassing event in partnership with University of Virginia and City of Charlottesville’s Neighborhood Development Service office. We will be in the Venable, Stadium Road and Fontaine Avenue areas in the afternoons this week. CIty Fire and NDS staff in coordination with UVA’s office of Environmental Health and Safety staff will be knocking on doors and checking with residents and UVA students to ensure that they have working smoke alarms and home safety plans.
 

A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths last year resulted from fires in properties without working smoke alarms according to the National Fire Protection Association. A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire.
 

During the canvass for homes found without working smoke alarms, the Charlottesville Fire Department will install free smoke alarms during the visit or we can reschedule a time to come back. If no one is home, we will hang a tag on the door with information on how to get a free smoke alarm and on the back is a home safety check list to assist residents with home safety planning.

The Charlottesville Fire Department would like to remind are residents of these tips:
– Test your smoke alarm every month
– Vacuum or dust your smoke alarm every month
– Change the batteries twice a year – “Change your clock, change your battery” – use daylight savings as a reminder
– Replace your smoke alarm if it is over 10 years old
