Charlottesville School Board to consider three applicants for interim appointment

A former city councilor, an author of a book about early childhood parenting and a former city School Board member have applied for an interim appointment to the Charlottesville School Board.

Last week, Charlottesville City Schools received applications from:

  • Ned Michie, an attorney who served on the Charlottesville School Board from 2004-2017
  • Kristin Szakos, a writer who served on the Charlottesville City Council from 2010-2017
  • Graham Scharf, director of operations for Barrett-Johnson & Associates and author of The Apprenticeship of Being Human.

The interim member will hold that office until the end of 2019. The application for the position states that “preference shall be given to applicants who have previously served on the Charlottesville City School Board and is not intending to run for election in November.”

Former School Board member Amy Laufer moved to Albemarle County with her family in January, immediately ending her eligibility to serve. Laufer was elected to her second term in November 2015 and would had been up for re-election in November.

The School Board is scheduled to hold a public hearing at 5 p.m. Thursday to receive input from applicants in Charlottesville High School’s Booker T. Reeves Media Center. The School Board is slated to vote on the interim appointment on Feb. 21.
