AUDIO – City Council discusses murals with BAR, PLACE Task Force

The Charlottesville City Council asked members of the Board of Architectural Review at a joint meeting last Thursday why they rejected the design for a mural on the side of a historic building on the 500 block of West Main Street.  

BAR criticisms focused mainly on the mural’s overall design, size and color in a historic streetscape.  The decision sparked controversy as to whether or not City Council and the BAR would approve a piece of public art that does not align with their personal tastes.

The meeting was also the first time the new PLACE Design Task Force met with City Council and the BAR. The group was created at the suggestion of City Councilor Kathy Galvin to research best practices and to advise city officials on urban design matters, particularly for city-funded or managed projects.
