From the newsroom: Charlottesville Tomorrow bids farewell to Marie Ungar

Since nearly the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Marie Ungar has been a part of our newsroom, playing a crucial role in our reporting on what the disease means for live in the Charlottesville area.

Today, we’re saying goodbye.

Marie, a Harvard University student from Albemarle County, is weighing her options for the fall.

“It has been an incredible privilege to work for Charlottesville Tomorrow, especially during such a pivotal moment when their mission seems more important than ever,” she said. “Charlottesville Tomorrow has given me the opportunity to connect more deeply with my community, even during a pandemic that can often feel isolating. Covering local decisions that will impact public health and reporting on issues from resources for those in unsafe living situations to protections for LGBTQ+ Virginians has given me a sense of purpose this spring and summer. I’ve learned so much from both the newsroom team and the Charlottesville community, and I’ll take these lessons wherever I go.”

Marie began with us as a temporary volunteer when she returned home from college due to the pandemic. As summer approached with no sign of the coronavirus abating, we were able to offer her an internship through July 31.

“Due to a focus on filling the lead reporter position and the pandemic, we had suspended our internship program this year,” News Editor Elliott Robinson said. “Since Marie is from here, showed strong instincts as a journalist and already was acquainted with our team, extending her time with us into the summer was an easy decision to make.”

We thank her for the hard work she has done and look forward to her future endeavors.
