With the end of the semester at University of Virginia, Charlottesville Tomorrow once again says goodbye to a talented and hard-working reporter. Kate Hidalgo Bellows, a soon-to-be 2020 UVa graduate, has reported locally for four years as an enterprise reporter for The Cavalier Daily and has worked with Charlottesville Tomorrow as a freelancer this spring to help us cover the COVID-19 pandemic. Her most recent work includes a series entitled “Lifeline,” which will continue this week.
“This has been such a great way to cap off my experience reporting in Charlottesville!” she said. “It has been such a privilege to tell the UVa and Charlottesville communities’ stories as a journalist for four years, and I am sad to say goodbye. Having the opportunity to dig into issues I haven’t dug into before and to speak to dozens of people who are fighting the COVID-19 crisis on the front lines has given me a sense of purpose during these last few weeks, and I am very grateful for it.” Kate is moving to Bluffton, South Carolina, to work for the Island Packet as a member of Report for America’s 2020-2021 Corps. She is one of 225 emerging journalists hitting the ground in more than 160 newsrooms across the U.S. at a time when they are needed most. “Kate dived right in and did amazing work, despite the challenges the pandemic has brought to news gathering,” News Editor Elliott Robinson said. “I’m looking forward to following her career.” Thanks, Kate.
