Here are the Charlottesville pharmacies that are offering COVID vaccines

By next week, COVID-19 vaccines may be available at multiple pharmacies in Charlottesville.

The federal government last week expanded its Federal Retail Pharmacy Program to include more multiple stores in addition to CVS that can now distribute vaccines in Virginia. 

Details are still vague on which pharmacies will have vaccines and when.

Here is everything we know so far about the local pharmacies in the program:

  • Kroger: Charlottesville Kroger stores will receive “a limited supply of vaccines,” said Allison McGee, corporate affairs manager for Kroger Mid-Atlantic. The company has said anyone in Phase 1A or 1B can schedule an appointment directly with the store either at , or by calling 866-211-5320.
  • Walgreens: A company spokesman said it would not “provide a comprehensive list of store locations or individual store allocations” and that supplies are “very limited.” The store is getting all three of the approved vaccines — Pfizer, Moderna and now the single-shot Johnson & Johnson. The first doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine should have arrived in the state Friday, and the store may begin administering them as soon as this weekend. “Eligible” people can make appointments for any of the vaccines online at or by calling 1-800-WALGREENS. The company has also set up alerts on available appointments that customers can sign up to receive here. 
  • Walmart: The company did not respond to Charlottesville Tomorrow’s inquiries. The store has an online scheduling system where people can sign up to see what stores have vaccines.
  • Harris Teeter: A Virginia Department of Health spokeswoman said Friday evening that Harris Teeter would have the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to distribute. Representatives from Harris Teeter could not be immediately reached.
  • Food Lion: Its parent company is on the list, but the Charlottesville Food Lions “have not been notified by our state or federal partners regarding any doses we may be allocated in the Charlottesville area,” a spokesman said.
  • CVS: CVS continues to distribute vaccines to people age 65 and up, and now K-12 teachers, daycare and preschool workers, and staff. Appointments can be made here.

The federal program leaves it up to the state to determine who is eligible to receive vaccines from the retail locations. Several of the newly added pharmacies have taken that to mean anyone in either of the open 1A or 1B phases.

However, the Virginia Department of Health restricted CVS — the first pharmacy authorized to administer the vaccine — to distribute only to people over age 65. It’s unclear if the state will do the same with the new pharmacies.
