Brownsville Principal, India Haun, Appointed to Division Role as Director of Accountability & Research
(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – India Haun, who has served as the principal of Brownsville Elementary School since 2010, has been appointed as the Director of Accountability & Research for Albemarle County Public Schools. Ms. Haun succeeds Bonnie Pendleton, who announced her retirement earlier this year.
In her new role, Ms. Haun will report to the division’s Chief Information Officer, Vincent Scheivert. She will work closely with departments and schools in the analysis of student academic data and in recommending assessment structures to measure the quality of student learning. Her responsibilities also will include management of the school division’s accountability processes for all grade levels and the compilation and reporting of test data to state and federal agencies.
“An important component of our ability to serve the college and career readiness needs of our students is continuous improvement,” Mr. Scheivert said. “Ms. Haun’s expertise in data analytics, her more than two decades of service to students in our school division both as a teacher and a principal, and the innovations she has brought to student learning at Brownsville all make her an ideal choice,” he said.
Brownsville is Albemarle’s largest elementary school with more than 700 students in grades pre-K through five. In recent years, the school has earned a Virginia Board of Education Excellence Award and Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) program; opened an Innovation Learning Lounge utilizing 21st century technology; and had one of its student Destination Imagination teams finish first in world competition.
“Our school division is strongly committed to diversifying and expanding student learning,” Ms. Haun said. “We want all students to graduate with the lifelong-learning skills they need to succeed as learners, workers and citizens. Ensuring we meet that goal requires us to be comprehensive and sophisticated in the way we compile, interpret and use data. I am eager to work with my colleagues to identify areas where we can improve student learning and to build upon and share the many strengths of our instructional model,” she added.
Ms. Haun will assume her new duties on December 1.
The school division has begun a search to appoint a new principal for Brownsville, with a goal of making an appointment no later than next spring. Until then, Barbara Edwards, a retired principal of Broadus Wood Elementary School, will be Brownsville’s interim principal.
Ms. Edwards served for 12 years as principal of Broadus Wood and previously was an elementary school principal with two other Virginia school divisions. She began her career in education as a reading specialist and taught at the elementary and middle school levels. She is a graduate of the State University of New York at Oswego and holds a Master’s Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.
“Barbara knows our division well and will bring a highly collaborative leadership style to Brownsville. She has a strong record of elevating student achievement in every school for which she has served,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Matt Haas.
