The Central Library will be hosting events in honor of Black History Month in February.
On Saturday, February 6 at 11am, the library will host a Meet the Author event with Sadiq Ali. He will discuss his book, Benjamin E. Mays Institute: Educating Young Black Males, about his success starting an African American all-male school and how the nation can use education to improve the future for today’s young black men.
On Thursday, February 11 at 6-8:30pm, the library will be showing the film Boys N the Hood (1991) and hold a half-hour community discussion sparked by topics in the film, which cover challenges still faced within the black community today.
As part of Central Library’s Documentary Film Series, on Thursday, February 25, the library will show the movie The Coachman (2014), about the life of a local African American domestic worker in Albemarle County, for one of the area’s most distinguished estates.
Central’s newest book club, Books on Tap, will also be honoring Black History Month by reading and discussing the book The Turner House by Angela Flournoy on Thursday, February 4. Books on Tap meets at Champion Brewing Company at 7pm.
