ACPS experimenting with afterschool affordability

The closing of Yancey Elementary and its afterschool program have caused Albemarle school officials to once again think about how to offer affordable afterschool programs to all county students.

Club Yancey cost $100 per year thanks to federal grant funding. But with $142,000 in 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants being cut from President Donald Trump’s proposed budget, school officials said the program would not have been able to continue this year, even if the school had stayed open.

With the issue of affordability on the minds of parents who once sent their children to Yancey, the division is testing out a pilot program that would reduce afterschool program costs for these families.
