Opinion/Editorial: Stop arms help to limit lawbreaking
Daily Progress Editorial Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 8 a.m.
Lengthened stop arms were an effective deterrent to the perilous practice of drivers running past stopped school buses.
“It actually exceeded my expectations,” said Jim Foley, director of transportation for Albemarle schools.
For buses outfitted with the stop arms, a test program showed a 55 percent reduction in this particular form of lawbreaking.
Of course, if drivers would obey the law, we could approach 100 percent compliance. And that would be 100 percent safer for children.
Still, we’ll take this improvement and applaud it with gusto.
