Architectural design for Charlottesville train station addition clears hurdle

The Charlottesville Board of Architectural Review on Tuesday approved preliminary architectural design features for an addition to the train station building off West Main Street.
According to local officials, the addition to the Union Station building owned by developer Allan Cadgene could help accommodate expanded passenger rail service to the city. Documents submitted to the BAR show the developer will increase the size of the station’s waiting room, its ticket office and the baggage handling area.
In an interview Tuesday, longtime rail activist and former City Councilor Meredith Richards said the building expansion is necessary for two tentative passenger railroad service expansions.
