Charlottesville school officials expound on increased funding request

The city of Charlottesville is facing a $2.8 million deficit in the current draft of the next fiscal year’s budget, which includes $2 million in new funding for the city school system — about $700,000 less than what has been requested by the superintendent.

At a meeting between the City Council and School Board on Thursday, school system officials presented information about their funding request in the $83.7 million budget proposed for fiscal year 2019. The funding increase from the city would bring its annual contribution to the school system to $54 million.
