Facing spending gap, city weighs $5M list of unfunded items

The Charlottesville City Council is weighing a proposal to hire new staff that will help councilors engage the public, disseminate information and analyze policy proposals.

Expanding the council budget to include two new officials and upgrade a part-time administrative assistant position to full time are the among the items in a $5 million laundry list of expenditures that are not included in the draft budget for fiscal year 2019.

The city estimates the new staff for council will cost about $225,000 per year.
