Housing affordability challenges focus of summit

Local community organizers, nonprofit executives, housing activists, developers, architects and city planners gathered at the University of Virginia on Friday for a new annual summit focused on what the community is doing to address Charlottesville’s housing affordability challenges.

In her opening remarks Friday morning, Mayor Nikuyah Walker said the city is at “a critical juncture” where housing needs to be a broader part of confronting economic and social injustice.

“It’s important for us to understand where we all are,” she said. “We’re not just talking about housing; we’re talking about undoing a legacy that’s been in place for 400 years.”
