Local divisions weigh policies ahead of planned student walkouts

Two weeks ahead of planned nationwide school walkouts to protest gun violence, school systems and universities are struggling to address questions about their protest policies.

The National School Walkout on March 14 will mark one month since 14 students and three staff members were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The University of Virginia’s Student Council is hosting a walkout in solidarity, but area K-12 schools say they are still trying to determine guidelines for student participation.

In an email directed to members of the Albemarle County Public School community, Deputy Superintendent Matt Haas said the division has received questions about the policy regarding student participation in the walkouts.
