Embattled Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society makes progress with city

The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society is meeting a series of goals the Charlottesville City Council set as conditions of an agreement last fall, the organization’s new president said, but it’s uncertain whether it will continue leasing the city-owned McIntire Building much longer.

On Monday, the council will discuss whether it wants to continue collaborating with the struggling historical society, which has lost approximately half of its membership in the last decade and saw its president voluntarily resign over the weekend of Feb. 10 without any indication of why.

Steven G. Meeks’ resignation last month marks a pivotal change for the organization, as new leadership has started working with the city to rectify several issues that have come up.
