Draft plan for Jones reveals apparent frustrations

According to a draft of an annual work plan for Charlottesville’s city manager, some city councilors want Maurice Jones to develop more-robust communications and crisis management strategies and be more accountable in his oversight of city projects and initiatives.

Several councilors last fall said the work plan was the subject of Jones’ annual performance evaluation. Those discussions did not lead to any action on extending Jones’ employment contract, which is set to expire Dec. 6.

As Jones will work in the coming months to meet the council’s expectations, his performance will be scrutinized again later this year when the council begins discussions about whether it wants to retain Jones as the top executive for the city.
