Mixed-use project raises concerns in Belmont

A major mixed-use development that could bring 138 new residences and an additional 918 vehicle trips per day to the heart of Belmont is causing concern for some neighborhood residents. And it’s possible the project could become bigger than what’s already been proposed.

As new restaurants and the draw of downtown Charlottesville has brought new life to the Belmont-Carlton neighborhood in recent years, some residents see the potential approval of a proposed Riverbend Development project as a pivotal moment for their community.

Though other projects and traffic conditions in Belmont already have been the subject of complaints from neighbors in recent years, some residents are troubled because the development team hurried a site plan submission to precede a potential rezoning for the neighborhood.
