Residents concerned by proposed blasting for development

Charlottesville residents in the Belmont-Carlton area are concerned by a developer’s request to blow up a rock formation so a planned unit development can proceed.

While the permit is subject to approval from the fire marshal’s office, according to a recent city news release, residents are circulating a petition asking the city and parties involved in the Belmont Point project, located between Quarry Road and Druid Avenue, to meet with neighbors and consider alternative plans that would “eliminate or substantially reduce the risk to the health and safety” to neighboring residents.

In remarks shortly after the start of the City Council meeting Monday, interim City Attorney Lisa Robertson addressed numerous public inquiries about the permit and suggested that councilors can consider adopting an ordinance that will require public hearings for such permit applications.
