City panel recommends shifting affordable housing money

A Charlottesville Housing Advisory Committee subcommittee decided Tuesday it will recommend that the city allocate $2.4 million to a private developer and two nonprofits involved in affordable housing development and related support programs.

If the City Council approves the allocations, the Albemarle Housing Improvement Program, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville and the developer of Carlton Views III, respectively, will receive $375,000, $585,000 and $1.4 million for their myriad projects.

The subcommittee — due to limited funds and an ongoing zoning code dispute for a proposed project on Cherry Avenue — did not recommend funding for two other applicants that are hoping to develop new affordable housing.
