Blasting, redevelopments draw interest at council meeting

Ahead of Monday’s City Council meeting, a dozen people signed up to speak about newly proposed conditions for the use of explosives for excavation and for a special-use permit requested for the Dairy Central redevelopment project.

While the advance sign-up for the preliminary public comment period at the start of the meeting indicated strong public interest in those two subjects, the agenda for Monday’s meeting included three public hearings on proposed zoning changes that could have an impact on other upcoming redevelopment projects.

As the city waits for the redevelopment of the publicly supported Friendship Court apartments and the Hydraulic Road shopping center where Kmart and Gold’s Gym used to be, developers have requested zoning changes to accommodate their projects.
